    Year 2 Phonics

Year 2 phonics practises the National Curriculum expectations for Year 2: decoding until it is automatic and reading is fluent, recognising alternative sounds for graphemes, reading words with common suffixes, and learning new ways of spelling sounds already known. Your child's school follows its own phonics programme, so follow the school on the order of sounds.

What children learn in Year 2 Phonics

Spelling longer words by adding suffixes (-ment, -ness, -ful, -less, -ly)

Learning spelling rules for adding -ed, -ing, -er, -est, -ness, -ment

Recognising and reading words with common spelling patterns

Extra decoding practice for a child retaking the Phonics Screening Check in June of Year 2

    How WonderPath teaches Phonics

    AI tutor that adapts

WonderPath's AI tutor adjusts difficulty in real time. If your child finds a topic easy, it moves on. If they struggle, it provides extra scaffolding and worked examples: just like a patient one-to-one tutor.

    Interactive activities

Every lesson includes hands-on activities: drag-and-drop puzzles, quizzes, drawing tasks, and creative challenges. Children learn by doing, not just watching, keeping engagement high.

    Progress tracking

Parents see where their child is thriving and where they need support. WonderPath tracks progress against each curriculum objective your child has practised and shows what comes next.
